A NEW music initiative is hitting all the right notes on Ormskirk Road in Pemberton.

Martin Heaton opened The Music Projects in September, offering professional tuition for a range of instruments.

Martin said: “This is something that I have wanted to do from years ago but the time just wasn’t right until very recently.

“After I finished at university I was working as a drum tutor for another company.

“This place used to be an estate agents, it’s in a good location and we’ve been doing well since we opened.

“We offer tuition starter packages at the moment - first four lessons for £39 - and during the summer we’re planning to offer a holidays package which will be six lessons for £69.

“We’ve also got some workshops planned where kids can come and design their own guitars, pick the colours for example, and we’ll get them lacquered onto the instrument and learn the basics about guitar set-ups. And we’ll also set up an adult workshop so musicians can build their own guitars from scratch.

A few doors down from the music projects shop is James Derbyshire’s Sandwich Express.

The business is celebrating its fifth birthday this week with cakes on the counter for customers to help themselves.

James said: “It has gone really quickly if I’m being honest, this first five years.

“I made a few changes about 18 months ago and since then things have really picked up.

“We now do homemade burgers and pulled pork as well as the usual sandwich range.

“The busiest time of the week is Friday lunchtimes when people are treating themselves before the weekend.

“This is a great location, there’s loads of staff from nearby businesses that are regulars here and we get loads of passing trade.

“In fact, the new owners at the barbers up the road have been in a few times since they opened.”

The firm James is referring to is Allan’s Barbers.

Partner Joe Shaw said: “We have been sending customers down to James’s and he has done the same with us.

“We opened earlier this month and we’re trying to get our name out there.

“We do gents cuts, beard trims and all the usual barber services.

“And we’re open through the week apart from Wednesday.”
