A COUPLE were pelted with stones by a gang of youths who tried to rob them of their valuables.
Police today appealed for information after the shocking daytime incident involving children as young as eight.
They have also warned other members of the public to remain vigilant in case of further attacks.
The pair were walking their dog along Woodhouse Lane, Beech Hill, at 9.30am last Saturday when they were approached by a group of about eight youngsters.
Aged between eight and 15, they surrounded the couple and demanded that they hand over their phones, watches and jewellery.
When the victims refused to co-operate, some of the young yobs then began throwing stones at them.
Eventually the youngsters fled empty-handed and were last seen heading towards the Scot Lane bridge.
It is not clear from police reports whether the unnamed victims suffered any serious injuries.
No descriptions of the young suspects have so far been issued by officers investigating the case.
A spokesman for the Wigan West neighbourhood policing team said: “If anyone may be able to identify these youths please ring the police 101.
“Alternatively ring Crimestoppers anonymously on (0800) 555111. Please be extra vigilant when in the area.”
