Crocked winger out for six months

Manchester City boss Mark Hughes is facing up to the prospect of having Martin Petrov missing for up to six months after the Bulgarian injured his knee while on international duty.

The left midfielder fell awkwardly after challenging for a ball, half an hour into Bulgaria's World Cup qualifier in Georgia on Wednesday.

The Manchester City manager's fears that Petrov has suffered the anterior cruciate ligament injury that every footballer dreads are compounded by the fact that the 29-year-old has had problems in that area before.

The assessment process will involve him returning to see the surgeon who operated on him last time, The Independent says.

It is a bad blow for City, since Petrov was one of the side's outstanding players last season.
