Wigan Athletic suffered a third defeat on the bounce after Jake Forster-Caskey's free-kick midway through the second half proved to be the only goal at Charlton.

Latics played well for the majority of the encounter, and will feel they created more than enough chances to have got on the scoresheet.

In the first half, Darnell Johnson headed straight at Ben Amos from Lee Evans' corner, when either side of the goalkeeper would surely have led to a goal.

Returning skipper Joe Garner also had a great shooting opportunity from 12 yards, but pulled his shot wide of the mark.

It was the same story in the second period, with Will Keane feeling he was fouled in the box only for the official to be unmoved, and the ex-Manchester United man then being penalised for a soft foul before teeing up Garner to slot home from close range.

Charlton had come closest when a Forster-Caskey free-kick touched the top of the bar in the first period, but the Latics defence were containing their opponents relatively comfortably.

However, Forster-Caskey made it second time lucky with 25 minutes to go, when his 30-yard free-kick somehow crept in off the post, with Jamie Jones seemingly thinking the ball was going wide.

There was more drama to come in the closing stages, when Latics were screaming for another penalty after Evans - making his 100th appearance for the club - saw a shot helped onto the bar by a defender on the line.

The Wales international appeared to be taken out as he got his shot away, only for the referee to again wave play on, and Latics' afternoon was summed up when Garner couldn't help the rebound home from a yard.
