THIS is the historical moment Wigan Athletic stepped out for their first ever European home game against NK Maribor.
Renamed the Wigan Athletic Stadium, due to UEFA advertising regulations, the players played their part on the momentous day by sealing a convincing 3-1 victory.
On-Loan Nick Powell scored the first and last goals of the game while Ben Watson, whose final in the FA Cup final secured the club’s Europa League qualification in the group stage, nodded home a header not too dissimilar from the one on that famous day in May.
Maribor did pinch a goal but the night belonged to Wigan Athletic, who were more than deserving of their victory.
Don’t miss all the reaction in today’s Wigan Evening Post (Friday).
