ROBERTO Martinez is remaining tight-lipped as to whether Manchester City winger Shaun Wright-Phillips is on his radar – but the Wigan boss confirmed there will be ‘a few more’ new signings on the way.
Martinez kicked off his summer spending on Monday by shelling out £3million to Bolton for Ali Al Habsi, and has now set his sights on attacking options.
The Spaniard is eyeing wing targets, with Tom Cleverley having returned to Manchester United and Charles N’Zogbia looking increasingly likely to be sold before the start of next term.
As a result, Latics have found themselves strongly linked with Wright-Phillips, who looks to have been frozen out of the first-team picture at Eastlands.
Chairman Dave Whelan admitted last week the former England man had been discussed at boardroom level, although it’s understood he’d have to take a massive drop in wages for Latics to even have a chance of doing a deal.
Despite the Wigan squad returning for pre-season training tomorrow, Martinez is happy for the rumour-mill to keep churning out names while the real work goes on behind the scenes.
“It would be a big, big mistake to start talking about all the players who we would love to have in the squad here or the ones we wouldn’t like to have,” he told the Evening Post.
“We have been following a number of players over the past few months, and we’re going to carry on doing that.
“What I can say is I am delighted with the squad we have at the present time, and we are determined to finish the transfer window with a stronger squad than the one we had at the start.”
While the market has, in general, been slow to get going for summer, Martinez expects plenty of wheeling and dealing over the coming weeks.
“Ali was undoubtedly our top priority over the summer, we have got him in the bag and now we move on to the next targets,” Martinez added.
“Tom Cleverley has gone back to Manchester United, which leaves another space in the squad, and replacing him will be our next task.
“But a lot will depend on what develops over the next three weeks, because there are going to be a few changes about the place – I’m sure about that.
“There are a couple of players we are trying to re-sign to new deals, while there are going to be some new signings coming in to the squad. Regardless of who comes in, though, what is important is that they improve the squad while at the same time having the same mentality as Ali.
“We have something special in our dressing room at the moment and we need to make sure we help that rather than hinder it. Sometimes you can be rushed into things and bring the wrong characters into your club, and we will not be doing that.”
Martinez also confirmed there have still been ‘no firm offers’ for any of his players including N’Zogbia, who is reportedly at the top of Aston Villa’s shopping list.
