JORDI Gomez saw a stoppage-time penalty saved as Latics and Bolton shared the points in a real Lancashire hotpot.
Latics were second best for virtually the entire game, and looked like losing back-to-back games under Uwe Rosler for the first time.
They deservedly trailed to Lukas Jutkiewicz’s goal just after the half-hour mark.
Robert Hall’s free-kick created the opening, and Jutkiewicz stabbed the ball past Ali Al Habsi from close range.
The home side then had numerous chances to make the game safe, but couldn’t find what would have been a killer second goal.
Hall, Chung-Yong Lee, Jay Spearing, David Wheater and Tim Ream all came close, but found Al Habsi in top form.
And Latics found an equaliser with two minutes to go, when Nick Powell volleyed home in acrobatic fashion.
Rather than rest on their laurels, Latics went in search of an unlikely winner, and thought it had arrived in the last of five added minutes.
Substitute Callum McManaman was felled in the area by Alex Baptiste for a nailed-on penalty.
Gomez stepped up, but was denied by a magnificent save from Adam Bogdan, diving to his right.
