WIGAN Athletic’s wretched recent run continued with a dismal 2-0 defeat on the south coast at Bournemouth.
Latics had gone into the game having picked up only one point from their previous three matches since the international break.
And they were unable to buck that trend as a goal in either half saw the Cherries pick them off comfortably at the Goldsands Stadium.
Yann Kermorgant gave Bournemouth the lead nine minutes before the break with a clinical header from Matt Ritchie’s left-wing cross.
The big striker had earlier seen a goalbound shot magnificently tipped away by Scott Carson.
But Latics - without the injured Callum McManaman - were unable to muster anything in the way of a response.
And they were put out of their misery with 20 minutes left when a clever passing move led to right-back Simon Francis slotting coolly past Carson.
It could have been even worse for Latics had Carson not stepped in to deny Callum Wilson moments later.
Latics substitute Andy Delort at least forced home goalkeeper Artur Boruc into action with a stinging free-kick in stoppage-time.
But it was too little, too late for a Latics side who must raise their game massively for Tuesday night’s visit of high-flying Nottingham Forest if they are to kickstart their campaign.
