LATICS failed to spoil Burnley’s promotion party as they were well-beaten at Turf Moor.
Uwe Rosler’s men were seconf best in all areas in East Lancashire as the Clarets secured the victory they needed to secure the second automatic promotion spot.
Latics will have to wait to secure their own place in the play-offs, and they will have to play a lot better than this if they are to join Burnley and Leicester in the Premier League next season.
The home side came flying out of the traps and gained an ascendancy they never relinquished.
Ashley Barnes gave them the lead halfway through the first period with a cool volley from close range after a super move involving Danny Ings and Dean Marney.
Latics almost found an equaliser on the half-hour mark when Jordi Gomez’s free-kick was header against the crossbar by Marc-Antoine Fortune.
And it was game over just before the interval when Michael Kightly curled home a free-kick from a virtually impossible angle which completely deceived Ali Al Habsi.
Callum McManaman and Rob Kiernan were thrown on at half-time in an attempt to get Latics back into the game.
And McManaman provided most of the positive moments in the second half as Latics failed to find a way past the best defence in the Championship.
At the other end, Ings nearly made it 3-0 only to see his shot come back off the post, as the Clarets confirmed their promotion in style.
