GARY Caldwell is cautiously optimistic Wigan Athletic forward Haris Vuckic has escaped serious injury.

The Slovenia international was helped off the field before half-time at Port Vale on Saturday, and left Vale Park with a protective boot on his right foot.

Whenever these things happen, we analyse it as much as we can and investigate the reasons why so we can do something about it

Although a full diagnosis has yet to be determined, Caldwell believes Latics may have a dodged a bullet.

“We’re hoping it’s not as bad as we first feared,” he told the Evening Post.

“Obviously it’s a heavy impact, and we thought he’d also rolled his ankle.

“That might not be the case. Hopefully he’ll be back soon.”

Caldwell also revealed Sean Murray and Francisco Junior have an outside chance of being fit for Saturday’s visit of Fleetwood.

All three players – Vuckic, Murray and Francisco – have joined Latics on loan deals, and Caldwell does not feel this is a coincidence.

“Whenever these things happen, we analyse it as much as we can and investigate the reasons why so we can do something about it,” he revealed.

“We feel the pre-season we gave our players and the training they are now doing has given them a base behind them to handle the intensity.

“The boys that have come in, we’re unsure of what they’ve done.

“The intensity and the nature of the physical work we’ve done has caught a few of them out.

“It’s something we have to be wary of with loan players, definitely.”
