GARY Caldwell wants Wigan Athletic to turn on the style when the season gets under way next week.

But not at the expense of winning football matches.

Everyone can talk about philosophy, but for me you have to win

Caldwell has already made reference to Latics returning to playing ‘the Wigan way’, as introduced by Roberto Martinez during his tenure.

But the Scot insists it won’t be a case of style over substance.

“Everyone can talk about philosophy, but for me you have to win,” he told the Evening Post.

“It’s not the only thing that matters, but it is the most important thing.

“Winning has to be the end goal to everything we do. There’s no point playing pretty football if you’re not going to win.

“We have to find a balance between the way we want to play and getting results at the right time.”
