GARY Caldwell believes the midweek JPT victory at Crewe underlined the huge strength in depth at Wigan Athletic.

Latics, having made the maximum five permitted changes from their previous line-up, advanced to round three thanks to a 3-2 victory that was more far comfortable than the scoreline suggested.

The visitors also missed a penalty and twice hit the woodwork, with fringe players taking their opportunity to impress.

“Even with five changes from Saturday, the team played the same way – they had the same control of possession, they attacked with a real threat,” recognised Caldwell. “It’s good to know you’ve got that back up sitting waiting to come on when necessary.

“It was wave after wave of attack in the second half, we had real control in the game.

“And that’s been the pleasing thing recently – the goals we’ve been scoring, the threat we’ve been posing from a lot of the areas in the pitch.”
