OWEN Coyle is closing in on a loan player he believes will make a massive difference to Wigan Athletic.
The Latics chief is having to balance his preparations for Saturday’s visit of Nottingham Forest with finalising his recruitment drive ahead of Monday’s transfer deadline.
While speculation continues to link midfielder James McCarthy with Everton, Coyle has been busy trying to further bolster his own squad.
“With regards to the loan market, there is certainly a player at an elite club who we would love to bring here,” Coyle told the Evening Post.
“Everything’s in place. We have a verbal agreement with the other manager and we’re just waiting for the right time to do the deal.”
The Wigan chief is keeping an eye on events elsewhere in the knowledge one big deal could have a big knock-on effect.
“We’re into the last week of the transfer window and I’ve got no doubts things are going to hot up,” he added.
“Given our understanding of what’s happening elsewhere regarding a few transfers, any club may become involved in a domino effect – and we have to be ready for that.”
Latics will face an FA Cup final rematch against Manchester City in the third round of the Capital One Cup.
The tie, at the Etihad Stadium, will take place in the week commencing September 23.
