OWEN Coyle has called for one more effort from his Wigan Athletic troops before most of them can put their feet up for a well-earned rest.
Tomorrow’s visit of Blackburn is Wigan’s seventh in the space of just 22 days spread across three competitions.
Fortunately there is an international break after the game, and Coyle wants his side to sign off in style.
“We’ve had to deal with a ridiculous amount of games of late, but we’ve got on with it and delivered such a high level of performance,” Coyle said.
“We just need to keep going for one more game then we’ll have a well-deserved rest for a few days.”
They won’t find it easy against a Rovers side who are bang in form after a dodgy start – especially with reported Latics target Jordan Rhodes banging them in.
“Blackburn are in terrific form, having won three on the bounce,” the Wigan boss acknowledged.
“But it’s a derby game, we are at home, we’ve been doing well here this season and long may that continue.
“If the fans can give us the same backing as they did on Thursday, I’m confident the players will respond and give us a performance to be proud of.
“We’ll be three games behind the rest of the league when we kick-off, so mentally that is a massive challenge for us.
“But all we can do is make sure we hang in there, so by the time we catch up in December it’s a level playing field.
“And we know by the time we’ve all played 46 games, we’ll be where we want to be.”
