OWEN Coyle will challenge his young players to impress him when they return for pre-season training next week.
The new Latics boss is giving the fringe players a clean slate ahead of the start of the Championship campaign.
Coyle is aiming to bolster his squad with “a minimum of six” new signings.
But he is also prepared to let others stake their claims in the team.
He said: “There’s no doubt that we need a minimum of six players, just to replace the players who have already left.
“We also have one or two younger players coming through who will supplement the squad, players like Fraser Fyvie, and they will get their opportunity to show what they can do in pre-season.”
Fyvie made just one Premier League appearance last season following his move from Aberdeen, though he featured more often in the Cup, making four appearances in their successful FA Cup run and three in the League Cup.
The Wigan players return to training next Monday and will have just five weeks to prepare for the season opener at Barnsley on August 3.
During that window, they will be travelling to America for a 10-day tour, facing MLS side Columbus Crew on Saturday July 13 and 3rd Division side Pittsburgh Riverhounds at the Highmark Stadium on July 19.
Meanwhile, speculation over Arouna Kone’s future intensified yesterday with Norwich rumoured to be competing with Everton for the striker’s signature. He signalled his intention to stay in the top-flight.
