Gary Caldwell admits the work currently being done on the DW Stadium pitch will be critical to Wigan Athletic’s hopes of continuing their upward trajectory next term.
The diggers are in as the stadium undergoes its annual pitch renovations to be ready for the new season in August.
It’s only three months since the pitch was relaid in February, after cutting up horrifically during a particularly nasty period weather-wise.
But a complete re-lay is once again necessary, to allow Latics to continue to play their attractive brand of football next term.
“I think one of the major influences in winning the league was relaying the pitch in February,” Caldwell told the Evening Post.
“If we hadn’t done that, it would have made it a lot more difficult.
“The club have again spent money on the pitch, and rightly so.
“We we need a good playing surface for us to be successful.”
