Chris Eagles made a surprise appearance for the Wigan Athletic Development Squad in their 3-0 Under-21 Premier League Cup defeat at Burnley.
The 29-year-old has been training with the club since the beginning of last week, although boss Gary Caldwell had played down his chances of winning a deal.
Eagles played 67 minutes against one of his former clubs, with Grant Holt and Don Cowie also getting valuable minutes under their belt as they near a full return from injury.
When askled about Eagles last Friday, Caldwell had said: “Chris is someone who lives locally and he’s just been in for training.
“We’ve given him that opportunity to keep fit, and he’s done very well here.
“It’s just training at the minute, though. It’s not something we’re really looking into at this moment in time.”
Eagles is currently without a club after leaving Charlton, for whom he scored in their 3-0 victory at the DW last season.
