OWEN Coyle insists Wigan Athletic are exactly where they need to be with a week to go before the start of the new season.
Tomorrow’s visit of Dundee United concludes Wigan’s pre-season programme, with the big kick-off at Barnsley looming the following weekend.
“Fitness-wise we are at the levels we want to be, and five wins on the bounce is always going to be good for confidence,” Coyle told the Evening Post.
“Winning breeds confidence, there’s no doubt about that, and the players are showing they’re enjoying themselves at the moment.
“What we need to do over the next week or so is to keep our form going into the Dundee United game, and then conclude our preparations next week with some really good work on the training ground.
“We’ve rotated in every game, and that’s enabled most of the players to get some really good minutes under their belts.
“They’re all desperate to be in the side that starts the season, but I’ve always said that it’s not about just 11 players.
“It’s about the whole squad, because we’ll need different players at different times against different opposition.”
Wigan’s latest run-out saw them win 1-0 at Morecambe on Wednesday night, with Marc-Antoine Fortune’s late rocket helping to seal a close game.
“I thought we showed a little bit of fatigue in the second half, which was to be expected because of the workload,” Coyle added.
“It’s been a big ask for everyone but they’ve all shown they are up for it.”
