Latics live to fight another day
Wigan Athletic's immediate return to League One won't be confirmed until at least this coming Saturday.
Latics’ fate hung in the balance on Sunday afternoon as relegation rivals Birmingham City took on Aston Villa, with anything other than defeat for Harry Redknapp’s men being enough to confirm Wigan’s relegation.
But Gabby Agbonlahor’s first goal in 14 months, 68 minutes in, consigned Birmingham to defeat, leaving the gap between them and Latics at six points with six to play for.
Wigan take on Reading next Saturday while Birmingham host Huddersfield, but anything less than three points for Wigan and a loss for City will confirm Latics’ relegation.
