WIGAN Athletic take part in their first pre-season friendly on Saturday with the players champing at the bit.
Owen Coyle’s men take on Columbus Crew after landing in the States yesterday (Thursday).
The whole squad has made the transatlantic trip and can’t wait to kick a ball in anger for the first time since May.
FA Cup hero Ben Watson said: “It’ll be a tough 10 days in the States, with a training camp and three games, but it’s vital work to get through and will stand us in good stead.
“More and more teams have tried to tap into the USA market, and it’s important for the club to try to build on the FA Cup victory.
“You’d rather have the attention than no attention, that’s for sure, but it’s something we’ll enjoy.”
Teammate Shaun Maloney can’t wait neither, adding: “These sort of trips are usually all about fitness, obviously we’ll be playing our first games over there.
“The first week of pre-season has been very difficult and I would imagine that will continue in the States.”
