NICK Powell has admitted a glowing reference from Tom Cleverley persuaded him to join Wigan Athletic.
Powell signed for Latics on deadline day on a season-long-loan from Manchester United.
Cleverley took a similar career path three years ago, and has since established himself in both the United and England midfield.
And Powell, who looks set to make his Wigan debut at Leicester tomorrow, is hopeful of following suit.
“I spoke to Clevs before I came here and he told me how great his time at Wigan Athletic was and how it helped his development,” Powell said.
“Hopefully I can follow his example and return to United after a successful season here and as a better player.
“I also spoke with David Moyes, and we both agreed that I needed more game-time, which was the only thing missing from last season.
“Hopefully I can get that here and do the business for Wigan Athletic.
“You always need experience if you’re going to become a better player, no matter what division that might be in.
“I’ve played in the Premier League with Manchester United and League Two with Crewe, and now I’m getting a taste of the Championship I hope to prove myself in there as well.”
