ROBERTO Martinez believes his backline will be able to keep Robin van Persie in check when Wigan Athletic travel to Old Trafford this weekend.

United will be without England striker Wayne Rooney, who is out for several weeks after an accidental collision with former Latic Hugo Rodallega during their match against Fulham earlier this month.

But Van Persie has shown with four goals in his two starts, including a hat-trick at Southampton in their last outing, since joining from Arsenal that United are far from a one-man team – something Martinez is very much aware of.

“We all know what level Robin van Persie is at. What he did with Arsenal – not many players can reach that level,” Martinez told the Observer.

“Obviously he went to Manchester United, and you’re expecting him to take a little bit of time to settle in.

“But he proves everyone wrong with a phenomenal display against Southampton.”
