ROBERTO Martinez admits the past few days have been ‘hectic’ as Latics ready themselves for a seventh season of Premier League football.
Latics only found out shortly before 6pm on Sunday night which division they will be playing in next term, leaving plenty to do in terms of squad retention and recruitment for 2011/12.
“We had to stop planning for the future until we knew what division we were going to be in, and that’s why it’s been so busy in the last few days,” Martinez told the Evening Post.
“The main thing is we’re safe, and the football club can now really feel the benefits of staying in the Premier League.
“We have got players out of contract, and the priority is to sit down with them and see where we are.
“Away from that, we will be looking to improve the squad as much as we can.
“There will be a lot of work over the next five weeks, but it has to be that way.”
The futures of out-of-contract trio Mike Pollitt, Steven Caldwell and Jason Koumas are expected to be decided quickly, but of greater concern will be the fact that several of Wigan’s prize assets are about to enter the final 12 months of their contracts.
