ROBERTO Martinez has hailed the impact Latics midfielder Momo Diame has had in his homeland following a stunning international debut last weekend.

Diame made his long-awaited debut for Senegal on Saturday, and he played the whole game as the hosts beat Cameroon 1-0 in a African Nations Cup qualifier.

Latics boss Martinez said: “Momo played the 90 minutes and he’s already become an instant hero in his homeland.

“It’s a great reward. He’s worked so hard and it is probably the right time for him now.

“I think he can cope with the international demands now.

“Up until now he’s been magnificent in getting used to the pace and speed of the Premier League, and now he is ready to make the step up to that international stage.

“You can see that Senegal are putting a very strong team together right now, and it seems that Momo is going to be an important part of that.

“He really enjoys being part of the Senegal set-up and we’re excited for him as he begins this journey.”

Paris-born Diame has been in inspirational club form this season so far, scoring two FA Cup goals in 33 appearances in total.

Meanwhile, manager Martinez is getting right behind this coming weekend’s splendid ticket initiative for the Spurs home game, with accompanied under-16s gaining entry to the crunch Premier League clash for a fiver and under-fives being offered free tickets.

The Spaniard is not under-estimating the effect a cracking home crowd can have on his team.

He said: “The extra support from the fans can be absolutely vital for us, it’s so important. It can give players that extra yard. We saw that in the second half of the Birmingham game.

“The backing from the fans helped us kick on and that certainly made a difference.

“The environment at the DW was fantastic that day.

“We’ve got three home games left now and we need to recreate that atmosphere.

“I’d urge the fans to take advantage of these great offers – it can help everyone try and create moments that we’ll remember for the rest of our lives. The fans can make that difference and help us all at Wigan in achieving our aims and being successful.”
