CRAIG Morgan has saluted the ‘fantastic’ feat of Wales qualifying for next summer’s European Championships – and backed his countrymen to spring a surprise in the finals.

Wales can still win their qualifying group if they beat Andorra in Cardiff tonight and Belgium fail to beat Israel.

It gives us a fantastic opportunity next summer, and I do believe we have a chance to get out of the group at least

And Flint-born Morgan believes the achievement in making their first major finals since 1958 should not be under-estimated.

“What’s happened is fantastic, Chris Coleman’s done a fantastic job,” Morgan told the Evening Post.

“They’ve reached the finals, they fully deserve to be there, and they’ll have my full support when they get there.

“It gives the nation something to cheer about, something they’ve wanted for a long time.

“It gives us a fantastic opportunity next summer, and I do believe we have a chance to get out of the group at least.”

Wales’ success has not come as a shock to the 30-year-old defender.

“While I was in the squad, we had players coming through who were showing unbelievable talent,” added Morgan, who won the last of his 23 caps in May 2011 against a Scotland side skippered by Gary Caldwell.

“There was always a thought in everyone’s mind that in five years’ time they’d have a chance.

“Those players have progressed, they now play in the Premier League, and that’s the way it’s proved. It’s a group effort – everyone’s done their bit.”
