Perch about to slip the net?

JAMES Perch looks to be on the brink of leaving Wigan Athletic for Championship outfit QPR.

The West Londoners have been chasing the 29-year-old for much of the summer, and have already had three offers rejected.

But the Evening Post understands a fourth bid has been tabled that could well get the deal over the line - possibly by the weekend.

Perch, Wigan’s Player of the Year in each of his two seasons with the club since his £700,000 arrival from Newcastle, was never likely to remain at the DW once relegation to League One was confirmed.

However, with boss Gary Caldwell desperate for funds to boost his own summer recruitment drive, Latics were determined to hold out for their full valuation of the player who still had two years left on his contract.

Perch’s boots will be extremely hard to fill - not only was he able to cover both full-back positions, centre-half and holding midfield, he also took over the captain’s armband from Emmerson Boyce last term.

Jason Pearce and Craig Morgan would appear to be the frontrunners to succeed Perch as skipper for the new season, which kicks-off at Coventry on Saturday week.
