Reasons for relegation were '˜spelled out' - Perks

The dust is still settling on a second relegation in the space of three seasons.

And Perkins, who is mulling over the offer of a new deal to stay at the DW for a third year, admits a few home truths were uttered before the players went their separate ways.

“It was a disappointing season – very disappointing,” he told the Wigan Post.

“Everyone was obviously very down about it at the end of the season.

“No-one wanted this to happen, but it happened – and there were reasons why it happened.

“Those reasons were spelled out – especially among the players and the staff – and hopefully it’ll be a better season next year.

“It’s been identified about what’s gone wrong, and hopefully we can learn from that.”

Perkins, along with Jordan Flores, is out of contract this summer, but admits it would be a huge wrench to leave after becoming part of the furniture.

“I’d love to do another season,” acknowledged Perkins, before leaving Euxton for the final time this season.

“It’s still up in the air with me a bit, but hopefully we can get something sorted.

“Whatever happens I wish the club nothing but the best in the future, and get back where they belong.

“In the short term that’s the Championship. In the long term, hopefully that’s the Premier League.

“If something happens it happens. If it doesn’t happen, it doesn’t.

“I’ve still had a great time here, I’ve loved every minute of it. It’s been the best club I’ve ever played for and the happiest I’ve been as a player.

“If you’d told me two years ago, at 33, this was to come, I probably wouldn’t have believed you.

“Hopefully we can get something sorted, but we’ll see.”
