WIGAN Athletic club captain Gary Caldwell has signed a new one-year contract at the DW Stadium.

The deal will see the Scot combine his playing duties with a coaching role at the club’s academy.

Wigan Athletic are delighted to confirm that club captain Gary Caldwell has signed a new one year deal to remain at the DW Stadium, which will see him combine playing duties with a coaching role at the Academy.

The 32 year-old spent much of last season on the sidelines through injury but returned towards the end of the campaign.

Manager Uwe Rosler said: “Gary has been a great servant to the club in his time here, and we are delighted we will be able to continue calling upon his experience and professionalism next season when the tension will be high and we need big characters in our dressing room.

“On the field, we saw at the end of the season what an impact he made, especially in the play-off games when he played very well – and that calmness under pressure then spreads all over the pitch.

“Off the field, we need to have a tightly knit group to handle the intensity of the season and someone of Gary’s presence is vital to build a great dressing room. He is a role model to the younger players who can see the standards he sets every day in training and on match day.

“Whether he is playing in the team or not, he is someone who can have a major influence at the club.

“It is part of Gary’s natural development into the next stage of his career that when he has no first team duties to fulfil, he will take an active role in coaching at the Academy.

“Again, for all the younger players at the club to be able to call upon Gary’s experience will be an invaluable asset, at the same time as giving Gary the chance to build up his coaching CV as he works towards attaining his qualifications.

“It is a win win situation for everyone and we are delighted that Gary will be remaining with us.”
