WIGAN Athletic slipped to a hugely-controversial 1-0 defeat against fellow promotion hopefuls Watford at Vicarage Road.
Despite dominating for long periods, the visitors found themselves on the wrong end of a couple of big decisions from referee Andrew Madley.
In the first half, Madley disallowed what looked to be a perfectly good goal from Nick Powell, for an offside in the build-up.
Then, in the final quarter, Powell was clearly clipped inside the Watford area by Lloyd Doyley, only for Madley to wave play on.
There was then a depressing inevitability about what followed, with Christian Battocchio slotting past Scott Carson from 20 yards with eight minutes remaining.
