WIGAN ATHLETIC chairman Dave Whelan was ‘very satisfied’ with his Monday meeting with Roberto Martinez – and insists the Spaniard was ‘absolutely right’ to field the team he did against Swansea.
Latics extended their winless sequence at home in the league to 12, which leaves them rock bottom with just 11 matches remaining.
Whelan publicly questioned his manager’s selection in the immediate aftermath, and insisted he would be quizzing Martinez as to why Victor Moses, Momo Diame and Hugo Rodallega had been left out.
But after emerging from the meeting, Whelan admitted his faith in his manager was as solid as it has ever been.
“Roberto is usually right on football, and as usual he was right again,” he told the Wigan Observer.
“I still support him strongly.”
He added: “You’ve got to accept there were mitigating circumstances, though. I mean, who would like to travel for 10-11 hours on a plane and then step straight on to a football field?
“Having considered that, I was very happy with what Roberto had to say. His reasoning was fair and I back him 100 per cent.”
