WIGAN chairman Dave Whelan hopes Roberto Martinez will continue to manage the side despite suffering relegation.

Wigan chairman Dave Whelan hopes Roberto Martinez will continue to manage the side despite suffering relegation.

Martinez has been sounded out as one of the favourites to succeed David Moyes at Everton following the Scot’s move to Manchester United, with Wigan’s FA Cup final victory over Manchester City only making the Spaniard’s stock rise in the European managerial merry-go-round.

But Whelan insists the club’s sole aim next season will be to secure an instant return to the top flight, preferably with Martinez in charge of the side.

“We’ve got one
ambition now, and that is to come straight back up next season,” Whelan told Talksport last night.

“We will fight next year, and we’ll look to come back within that first season, it’s so important.

“I hope Roberto waits and has another one or two years with us.

“We’ve got one ambition now, we will fight to come straight back up into the Premier League next year.

“Roberto knows how I feel about him and I know how Roberto feels about me and the club, he’s a very, very loyal gentleman.

“When the days dawns – and it will – when he says, ‘chairman, I want to go to this or that club’, I will release him immediately.

“He is aware of that, and if that time is now, so be it.

“But somehow I don’t think it will be.

“I’m just hoping Roberto waits and has another one or two years with us, because he will eventually go to a top European club.”

Whelan also confirmed that the club are yet to have any contact from Everton in regards to a possible move for Martinez, as the Toffees look to replace Moyes following his 11 years in charge at Goodison Park. “The club have heard nothing whatsoever,” the Latics chairman added.

“Everton are a super club and they know the rules and regulations, they are very mannerly and I don’t think they would ever approach Roberto before the season is over. Even if he’s in their minds, I know Bill Kenwright wouldn’t do anything like that.”
