WIGAN Athletic were below-par across the board as they were held to a goalless draw at home by north-west rivals Oldham.

The match was played on a brand new playing surface at the DW, after it was relaid this week.

But boss Gary Caldwell refused to place any blame whatsoever on a bedding-in process for his side’s performance.

Only goalkeeper Jussi Jaaskelainen emerged with any credit as the relegation-threatened visitors edged a disappointing encounter.

Three times in the first half the ex-Finland international came to Wigan’s rescue, tipping away two efforts by Carl Winchester and another from Cameron Dummigan.

Latics struggled to get anything going in attack, with Will Grigg an increasingly isolated figure up front.

The Northern Ireland striker had Wigan’s best chance in the final quarter.

But after cutting in from the left, he saw a low drive brilliantly kept out by Joel Coleman.

Latics have slipped to fourth in the table, two points behind second-placed Gillingham and one behind third-placed Walsall, whom they visit next weekend.
