WIGAN Athletic are clinging to their Championship status by a thread after losing 1-0 at home to Wolves.

Only the fact relegation rivals Rotherham and Millwall failed to win keeps alive Wigan’s slight hopes of avoiding the drop.

But Latics would require the Millers to lose both of their remaining fixtures, and the Lions to lose their last game, as well as winning at promotion-chasing Brentford next weekend to stay up.

Benik Afobe scored the only goal after 25 minutes, heading home Bakary Sako’s free-kick.

Latics were indebted to goalkeeper Scott Carson for a couple of fantastic stops to keep them in the game.

But their afternoon - and perhaps season - was summed up in stoppage-time when James McClean was shown a second yellow card.

Relegated will be confirmed on Tuesday night unless Reading, who have nothing to play for, can win at Rotherham.

But boss Gary Caldwell is not throwing the towel in just yet.

“We’ll obviously know more after Rotherham’s result on Tuesday, before we go into the game at Brentford,” he said.

“If that goes our way then we’ll go into the game knowing a win might be good enough to do it for us.

“I’ve been there before both in England and Scotland, and I know that anything can happen on the last day.

“We’ll be ready, and we’ll keep believing we can get out of this.”
