LATICS were unable to bid farewell to the Barclays Premier League with three points as they were held to a draw by Aston Villa at the DW Stadium.

The visitors took the lead after four minutes through Darren Bent, but Latics were determined to go out with a bang and were in front by half-time.

First Emmerson Boyce powered home a header from Roger Espinoza’s cross.

Then Ben Watson’s shot was cleared off the line by Ashley Westwood only for Nathan Baker to deflect it back over the line.

But Latics couldn’t hammer home their superiority, and were pegged back when Ron Vlaar volleyed magnificently past Ali Al Habsi on the hour mark.

Wigan: Al Habsi; Boyce, Golobart, Scharner; McArthur, Watson, McCarthy, Espinoza; Gomez, Malloney, Kone.

Subs: Robles, Campabadal (for Boyce, 88), Redmond, Fyvie (for Watson, 68), Henriquez (for Gomez, 68), Di Santo.

Subs: Given, El Ahmadi, N’Zogbia, Dawkins (for Sylla, 59), Herd, Gardner (for Westwood, 88), Bowery (for Agbonlahor, 75).
