LATICS were held 3-3 by League One outfit MK Dons on their first defence of their FA Cup trophy.
Goals from Roger Espinoza and Jordi Gomez gave Latics a two-goal lead inside 25 minutes.
But a quickfire brace from Ben Reeves sent the Dons in level at the break.
MK Dons squandered a great chance to take the lead on the hour mark when Ali Al Habsi saved a penalty from Shaun Williams.
And Latics took full advantage when Callum McManaman raced through to make it 3-2 within seconds.
However, Marc-Antoine Fortune wasted a golden opportunity to put the game to bed in the final quarter.
And Latics were made to pay when Patrick Bamford slid home goal number six of a pulsating game with eight minutes remaining.
