OWEN Coyle will take his Latics squad to the USA for the first time in their history ahead of the Championship season.
The new campaign begins six weeks today with a trip to Barnsley.
And Coyle wants a strong pre-season to act as a launchpad to a successful year ahead.
Latics will be facing MLS side Columbus Crew at the Crew Stadium on Saturday July 13 and 3rd Division side Pittsburgh Riverhounds at the Highmark Stadium on July 19.
A further game could also be scheduled within the 10-day trip Stateside.
Coyle said: “The opportunity came up for us to go to the States and was too good for us to turn down.
“The players will love the facilities over there which are first class and it is a great way for us to begin our pre-season preparation in readiness for August 3.” To accomodate the tour of America, Latics will now not be travelling to Germany to face, among others, Hanover 96, as planned.
And the friendly games at Morecambe on July 13, and Oldham Athletic on July 20 have also had to be cancelled. The club apologised to fans for any inconvenience.
