In a game of precious few chances, the best came inside 10 minutes, when Omar Bogle fouled North End striker Callum Robinson inside the Latics box.

Gilks - making his home debut following his January arrival - was equal to Jordan Hugill’s initial spot-kick, diving to his left and parrying the ball out.

Hugill looked a certain scorer from the rebound, but his drilled effort towards the opposite corner from close-range was superbly snaffled by the Latics goalkeeper.

Aside from that, Gilks didn’t have a great deal to do as his defence ably marshalled the threat of the Preston forward line.

But at the other end, Latics again didn’t offer enough of a danger themselves, as they chase the wins that will lift them out of the bottom three.

The best opportunity fell to Bogle with 14 minutes to go but, before the striker could get his shot away, Greg Cunningham produced a fabulous challenge to snuff out the danger.
