Wigan Athletic star targets double-header

Lee Evans admits Wigan Athletic are looking forward to getting back to the DW on Tuesday night - for the first of two games in four days that will hopefully kickstart their campaign.

Saturday's 1-0 defeat at Charlton was Wigan's third setback on the bounce - after three wins in a row had raised spirits.

Despite the performance being good enough to merit at least one point, if not three, Evans sees the visits of first Peterborough and then Plymouth as golden opportunities to kick-off a new run.

"We've had two defeats on the road since the last home game, so we're looking forward to getting back," acknowledged Evans, who was back to his best at Charlton.

"It doesn't matter what team is on the pitch, this club has always been strong at home.

"And hopefully we can continue that with some positive results over the next two games.

"We're a new group with a lot of new players arriving at the club.

"Saturday was the first time this starting XI has played together, and we've got to have time to gel."

Evans was Wigan's star man at the Valley back in the engine room, having started the campaign in a more advanced role.

"I've done the job in the No.10 position, and I've tried to do the job Leam (Richardson) and the gaffer have needed me to do, because we've had no one to play in there," he said.

"I'm a team player, so I've been more than willing to do that.

"But my preferred position is definitely going in there to get the ball, which I think the Wigan fans know by now.

"I want to try and dictate the play, which is what I had the opportunity to do in the second half."

Indeed, that second-half rally could - and indeed should - have led to Latics being awarded a penalty, with boss John Sheridan incensed a foul on Evans - as he shot for goal - didn't lead to a spot-kick.

The Wales international, too, was left bewildered by official Ollie Yates' decision.

"Naisy (Kal Naismith) has picked me out with a little cut-back," Evans added. "I'm about to shoot and I got a kick from behind.

"That's the advantage of having no-one in the ground...you can actually hear the big knock on my foot.

"He doesn't give it, and there's one on Keano (Will Keane) in the first half, where again you can hear him boot his foot."

Sheridan also felt Latics were denied a perfectly good goal when Joe Garner's effort was disallowed for an apparent foul in the build-up by Keane.

"I think the less said about the Garner one where he scores the better," added Evans. "Because I'll end up getting in trouble."
