Wildschut happy with new system

The flying Dutchman was pushed forward alongside Jordy Hiwula against Crewe at the weekend.

And Wildschut thrived on the challenge, producing a sparkling display that, on another day, would have been rewarded with goals.

“I played in a different position, as one of the two up front, and it was nice,” Wildschut told the Evening Post.

“I was getting balls played through into the holes, and I was able to use my speed.

“Normally I play out on the left, and I really like that position.

“But how we played in this formation, with me up front, I think it’s also good.

“With the outlets we have in the team, I think it suits our style, and it’s just something we need to get used to a bit more. It was the first time I’ve played up front with Jordy, and I think it went okay. It will only get better the more we play in this system.”

The ex-Middlesbrough man was a mere coat of paint away from giving Latics all three points at Gresty Road.

After twice being denied by goalkeeper Ben Garratt, he then saw a fizzing shot beat the goalkeeper only to come back off the post, as well as sending a header on to the roof of the net.

“The only thing that was missing was the goals,” added Wildschut. I had a few chances and normally I would score one or two of them. Unfortunately this time they either just went over or hit the post or were saved.

“I’m happy that I managed to create the chances, because I’d be more concerned if I hadn’t managed to do that.

“But next time I know I have to do better, because if I’d only managed to score one of them we would have won the game and we would have had two more points.

“If I get the same chances this Saturday against Port Vale, hopefully I will score one or two.”
