In-form strike duo: There's more to come

Wayne Rooney has vowed to get even better and his £60m partnership with ex-Tottenham Hotspur star Dimitar Berbatov could be priceless for Manchester United.

While the England striker is on an eight-goals-in-six-games streak, his new Old Trafford ticket with the Bulgarian is also on a roll.

In United's last four matches against Bolton, Aalborg, Blackburn and West Bromwich Albion, the Rooney-Berbatov starting combo has yielded six goals.

Rooney's current form has been hailed as his finest in his four-year Reds career.

But he says there is even more to come.

"Maybe over the last couple of games I have been playing some of my best football for United but I know I can play better," he said.

"I have to keep working on the training ground. Hopefully there are better performances and similar results to come.

"I am really enjoying it at the minute. I don't know the reasons but I will just carry on playing the best I can and hopefully the goals will keep coming and I can help the team win.

"I am really pleased with how it is going with Dimitar. You can see it is getting better with each game.

"Some of his touches and the way he holds the ball up are brilliant. The likes of myself and the midfield players can make good runs off him so hopefully that will get even better."

The new Bulgarian import from Tottenham has contributed three goals himself to the partnership.

He broke his United duck in Denmark against Aalborg after three blank matches and kicked off his home account at Old Trafford against West Brom.

The 27-year-old is also impressed with the quality of his early pairing with Rooney and the England hitman's form.

"Wayne is playing fantastic. He is enjoying his game right now," said Dimitar.

"That is good not only for him but for us all because he is one of the best players in the team so when he plays well it is good for everybody, especially the fans because they like him and want him to do well.

"Our partnership is progressing well. You can see it on the pitch. We have been working in training to try and understand each other. It is working.

"It was good for me to score. It was a nice goal. I really wanted to score in front of the fans and hopefully there are more to come."

United boss Sir Alex Ferguson added to his recent praise of Rooney but stressed it was a team win against West Brom.

"We are delighted with Wayne. We know about his ability. He is maturing, that is the main thing," he said.

"Like all the young players here, they do mature. They get better each year that is what we expect.

The training standards are high, the expectations from our staff are high and the expectations of the players are high so it is a natural progress.

"I don't think it is the best he has played. He has played as well as that in periods since he came to the club.

"But he has an undoubted talent. He has a drive and energy about him, which is refreshing.

"It was a good team performance. I know there is this English thing about Wayne at the moment - to look on him as the saviour of English football but Wayne was part of a team on Saturday.

"As good as he was, there were others just as good."

Meanwhile, Rooney and team-mates Ronaldo, Edwin van der Sar and Nemanja Vidic were last night shortlisted for the European Footballer of the Year award. The winner will be announced on December 2.
