Jenny helps set new event relay record

Wigan's GB athletics international Jenny Meadows played her part as the Team Manchester squad finished third at the McCain Indoor City Challenge (ICC) final in Cardiff.

Team Sheffield took the McCain ICC title for a fifth consecutive year, but Team Manchester's Vicky Griffiths was the star of the show and

assigned 'athlete of the match'.

Griffiths, who represents Liverpool Harriers, looked extremely strong yet relaxed on the track in the women's 400m to take a win over Manchester team-mate Meadows, who represents Wigan AC.

Griffiths, who broke her indoor personal best for the first time since 2003 when she crossed the line in 53.92, said: "I set my personal best six years ago and have had nothing since.

"It's a new personal best and I feel really good.

"I think my attitude's changed and I'm just enjoying it and I'm not nervous anymore. It's good, and I'm pleased."

Team Manchester came close to the top spot but were forced to settle for third place in the final team rankings, despite several shining individual performances.

Manchester's women's medley relay team comprised of Leigh Lennon (Newham and Essex Beagles) Griffiths, Meadows and Kelly Massey (Birchfield Harriers).

And they dominated the race comfortably to set a new McCain ICC record of 4.56.98, while Alex Russell recorded the team's other win in the long jump with her 5.70m effort.

Team Sheffield continued their incredible McCain ICC reign with a fifth consecutive win.

And that left Team London North and Team Manchester in second and third places, respectively.

Team Bristol, Team Newcastle and Team Cardiff took fourth, fifth and sixth places, while Edinburgh and London South were left at the bottom of the Team rankings at the end of the event.
