SUPERSUB Chris Baguley secured Ashton Athletic a priceless 2-1 away Premier Division win at Padiham on Saturday.
Athletic held out in the first half against a spirited Padiham side, who pressed them hard but never really threatened Ross Baxter’s goal.
The second half once again saw the home side press hard and on 55 minutes they were awarded a penalty after a clumsy foul and Heep netted the resulting spot-kick.
This seemed to awaken Ashton and Lloyd Balazas turned a deflected shot home in the 75th minute.
With 10 minutes left Athletic boss Steve Wilkes produced an inspirational substitution when he took off striker Lee Barrett, who had worked hard all afternoon without result, and replaced him with striker Baguley, and it was the sub who won a free-kick in the 90th minute a few yards outside the Padiham box.
Baguley took control of the situation, whipping the ball with pace and direction over the defending wall and into the back of the hosts’ net, giving Athletic a 2-1 lead and all three points.
l IN the first division Ashton Town, who parted company with manager John Carroll last week, went down 4-1 at Eccleshall.
Harry McGill netted Town’s consolation goal.
