DIVISION Three Chequer Lane faced Premier Division leaders North Star in the Houghton Memorial Cup and almost pulled off the shock of the season.

It seemed like a cake-walk for North Star as they took and early lead through Sam Denton. Chequer Lane took the game to North Star but late first half goals by Mick McGurk (pen) and Denton gave Star an undeserved 3-0 lead.

But Chequer Lane fought back and goals by Jordan Murray and James Thompson put the game in the melting pot.

In an all-Premier tie, Dynamo Globe knocked out Highfield Grange by the odd goal in five.

A brilliant 18-yard volley by Dave Johnson gave Dynamo Globe a 1-0 lead. In the last five minutes of the half Jamie Harrison converted a penalty before a terrific free-kick by Alex Turner gave Highfield a 2-1 interval lead. Chris Robinson stuck back for the Globe and in the 80th minute the same player scored the winner from a free-kick.

Division Two Up Holland were too strong for Division Three’s St Helens Rovers and won 7-1. Mike Juniper (2), Mike Spicer, Craig Manning, Matt Davidson and Adam Graves were on target.

Horwich St Mary’s of Division One triumphed 5-0 against Division Two St Cuthbert’s. Alex Abbott hit a hat-trick.

Orrell Otters came from behind to win the Orrell derby against Sorrento 3-1.

Daniel Fletcher gave Sorrento the lead but Mike Price equalised just before the interval. After the break, Tom Potter and Joe Unsworth clinched the game for Otters.

Division One Penlake played hosts to Division Two’s Parklands and won 3-1. Chris Foster gave Penlake a 1-0 half time lead but Kev Handley equalised. Darryl Hale and Andy Simm wrapped up victory.

In and all Division One tie, Academy Sports ran out 3-1 winners against PSN Mabs X. Neil Foster and Andy Gower scored either side of the interval to give Academy a 2-0 lead.

Adam Berry pulled a goal back, but a second Gower goal clinched the game late on.

Knowsley South were too strong for Winstanley Warriors and won 11-3.

Aspull came from behind to beat Halsall 3-2. Halsall took the lead with a long punt from their ‘keeper. Aspull equalised through Danny Edmondson and took the lead through Adam Flores. Halsall equalised but Flores scored his second goal to put Aspull through.

In Division One, Marus Bridge hit a late winner as they beat Ashton Villa 2-1. Rob Tyrer and Martin Thomas were the marksmen for Bridge.

Up Holland Rangers moved off the bottom and out of the relegation places after a 3-1 win at Whitley.

In Division Three, Martland Mill twice came from behind to beat bottom club PNC Athletic 5-2.

Sam Gregory hit both goals for PNC but Chris Foster and Lee Sherman (2 each) and Mark Grimes saw Martland Mill home.

Orwell made it two wins in a row with a 3-1 result against Darley AFC. A Craig Wooton brace won the game for Orwell.

Second-placed Halsall Reserves beat Hindley Athletic 3-1.

Jeff Highton (2) and Phil Baggaley put Halsall 3-0 up midway though the second half. A late Sy Aspinall penalty was just a consolation goal.

Digmoor and Bryn Hall were locked at 1-1 in their Division Two clash, with Sam Causer striking from 25 yards to give Bryn Hall a second half lead.

However, having already missed a penalty, Digmoor were awarded a second spot-kick and Ray Turner made no mistake.

FC Wigan Utd visited Goose Green Res and won 4-2 thanks to Steve Barlow (2), Ant Sivoy and an own goal.

Jay Roberts and John Heyes kept Goose Green in with a shout.
