Wigan’s own Olympian will be running the 10k along with all other supporters of the charity on Sunday, September 3.

As a board member of the Youth Zone and Sports Ambassador, Meadows wants to help raise funds towards the £2million it takes to keep the centre running day and night throughout each year.

Wigan Youth Zone opened its doors in 2013 – the year of the inaugural Wigan 10k.

The centre continues to offer young people somewhere to go, something to do and someone to talk to with some recent additional services such as a mentoring programme.

“I’ve seen what an amazing event the Wigan 10k is and how it’s grown over the years and is now one of Wigan’s premier annual events,” said Meadows.

“With the event starting and finishing just metres away from the WYZ I thought it was a unique opportunity to pull together a team to run in order to raise funds for the ongoing running costs.

“Having witnessed first hand what vital services the WYZ offers to young people of the town, and what valuable contribution it’s making to our local communities, I am happy to offer my time to help those people who sign up to run for the WYZ to prepare for the event.

“This time of year is a perfect time to start preparing for the event as runners can enjoy warmer temperatures and lighter nights in which to prepare.”

The first three training dates are this Sunday, May 21, Sunday, June 25 and Sunday, July 30 – all taking place 11am until 1pm, starting and ending at the Youth Zone.

The sessions will involve some warming up and stretching in the Youth Zone sports hall likely to involve some outdoor running in Mesnes Park and the local area.
