HIGHFIELD’S first and second teams opened their seasons with respective home and away cup games against
Steve Atkinson’s second team travelled to North Wales and had a comfortable win, but there was last ball drama in the first team game at Billinge Road where Simon Mollitt claimed a wicket to deny the visitors a surprise win.
In the first team game, James Taylor (15) opened up with skipper Mike Farrell and he was the first dismissed with 24 on the board.
Mike Gaskell (13) then joined Farrell and they added 60 before Gaskell’s exit heralded a mini collapse as Highfield stumbled to 98 for 4 with Farrell also out for 31.
Simon Mollitt steadied the ship with a fine 36, well supported by Chris Liptrot (15) and Sam Rotherham (15) as the home team posted a competitive 200 for 9 off their allotted 45 overs.
Prestatyn responded positively and were well placed at 100 for 1 before James Taylor claimed three wickets to sway the balance back towards the home team.
But the visitors rallied again and needed just three runs off the last ball before man of the match Mollitt claimed his own third wicket, caught by keeper Joel Welsby.
The second team bowlers restricted Prestatyn to 106, Craig Aspey claiming three wickets, Ryan Hargeaves two and Rob Wallace two, with the others shared around.
Openers Jake Borrows (72) and Tom Ashton (28) made light work of the target, securing a 10 wicket win in just 16 overs.
