WIGAN Robin Park have secured promotion to the North West Counties Premier Division after a 1-0 victory over Eccleshall last night.
It will be the highest level the club has ever competed at.
The Robins held on to claim victory after Ryan Small scored the only goal of the game inside the third minute at Robin Park.
The achievement is the latest in a fine season for the Robins who have reached the final of the First Division Trophy and the semi-final of the Lancashire Co-Operative Challenge Cup.
Manager John Neafcy said: “I’m delighted for everyone at the club. We’ve had fabulous support all season from everyone on the committee and around the club, and we have a band of fans who travel home and away with us who are fantastic.
“We’ll enjoy the moment, but we’ve got two games left, which if we win we’ll put pressure on Norton and Abbey Hey, and we want to go on and win the title now. It’s difficult for Norton, I understand that, but it’s difficult for the league as well to get the fixtures in. They have had a good season but there are victims of their own success.
“Our biggest bonus this season has been consistency of team selection. We have not had as many injuries as we had in previous seasons, and that has allowed to keep almost the same seventeen in the first team squad all the way through. We have had one or two out in the last month, and have struggled a bit, but we’ve got strength in depth in the squad now.
“We’re looking forward to playing in the Premier League, strengthening the squad a bit and taking it forward from there. Hopefully this time next year, we can be a Premier Division side in the top half of the table”.
