WIGAN Robin Park signed-off their home fixtures in style on Saturday when they thrashed local rivals Ashton Town 11-0.
The Premier Division-bound Robins outclassed Ashton all over the field and the writing was on the board after just four minutes when Ryan Small finished off a great move to open the scoring.
Seven minutes later the Robins were rocking and it was that man Small that doubled the scoreline.
The Robins were three-up after 17 minutes through left-back Adam Howard’s neat lob from 20 yards.
The remainder of the half saw wave upon wave of Robins attacks and leading scorer Phil Howard’s industry was awarded with two goals in the final two minutes of the half as they went in 5-0 at the interval.
There was no let-up for Town in the second period as Phil Howard completed his hat-trick on 55 minutes.
Three minutes later it was seven-up for Wigan as midfielder Shaun Judge finished well.
Phil Howard then got two goals in two minutes to make it five for himself and nine for the team before being substituted and left the field to a standing ovation from the Robins fans.
A goalless period of 20 minutes ensued when Ashton had a couple of long-range efforts, but Wigan hit double figures when centre-half Luke Faulkner headed home in the 83rd minute.
The 11th came in the final minute when a delighted Small completed his hat-trick as the Robins registered their highest-ever score.
Overjoyed manager John Neafcy said: “The football club is buoyant at the moment – from the spectators through to the committee and players.
“Understandably we were a little nervous last time out against Eccleshall – when we gained promotion – but today I just asked the lads to go out there and enjoy themselves and they did exactly that.
“We now have a week off, we’ll wait and see how our title rivals Norton United do in their games in hand and we’ll have a good go on Saturday to get the championship.”
Next Saturday the Robins are away at in-form Rochdale Town who lie fourth in the table.
Before that Park’s reserve team have two important games.
Tonight they entertain Irlam in a league game where they will be looking to close-in on the Reserve Division title. Kick-off at the Robin Park Arena is 7.45pm.
Then on Thursday they play Daisy Hill in the semi-final of the Wigan Cup at Garswood United’s ground. Kick-off is 6.15pm.
In the Premier Division, Ashton Athletic fell to a 4-1 home defeat against Ramsbottom United at the weekend. Lee Barrett scored Athletic’s consolation goal.
Athletic close their campaign with a trip to Alsager Town on Saturday.
