Wigan Hockey Club's men give rivals some stick

Wigan's Mens first team took on top-of-the-table Preston HC on their newly-laid astro turf and the crowds were not disappointed last weekend.

Wigan took the lead early on through a well-worked penalty corner seeing the ball fly off the end of captain Matty Smith’s stick into the back of the Preston goal.

Sustained pressure from Preston saw the equaliser when a well-worked penalty corner was initially saved by the Wigan goal keeper to see the rebound flicked into the roof of the goal.

Wigan again took the lead through Andy Blackburn finished a well-worked break away just before half time.

The second half saw Preston launch an sustained attack on the Wigan goal to equalise through an individual effort from the Preston midfield.

Wigan continued to defend against a skilled and well organised Preston attack seeing off penalty corner after penalty corner.

Eventually Preston’s efforts were rewarded with a rebound to take the lead 3-2.

Wigan once more broke away from a well-worked Preston penalty corner to find themselves corralled on the corner flag.

The ball then broke free to the in-form Blackburn, who drove the ball into the Preston D and scored to earn Wigan a draw on the final whistle, and their first point of the season.

Wigan’s Men’s second team found themselves playing away to Horwich seconds as league leaders.

This year sees a number of new juniors starting in the senior teams and so far the juniors are excelling.

An impressive performance from a number of the junior player helped the team to another win making it three out of three so far and to lead the league at this point. The final score finished 5-3.

Training takes place from 7pm to 9pm on Wednesdays at Wigan Sports Club for Ladies and Men’s teams. The junior section meets before from 6pm to 7pm.
