Strongman Steve sets a new record

Power lifter Ste Leigh

POWERHOUSE Wiganer Ste Leigh smashed the British Bench Press record – lifting the equivalent weight of a Silverback Gorilla!

It certainly proved a welcomed return to competitive Powerlifting for Leigh, as he eclipsed the British Bench press record at the Northwest Great Britain PowerLifting Federation (G.B.P.F) Championships in Colne.

The 50-year-old strongman beat the former record by a massive 17.5kg, by pressing a jaw-dropping 245kg – the same weight as three people each weighing 13st!

Leigh said: “It’s great to be back lifting at a competitive level.

“I started when I was 11, so I’ve always had the personal drive and ambition.

“I’ve always set records throughout my career and the chance to get back and step up to the next level is why I’m having another go.”

Leigh, who trains regularly at Catt’s Gym in Orrell, broke the record for competitors over the age of 50-years-old, which stood at 227.5kg.

Leigh needed only one attempt to break the former record before going on to further improve the lift and set a new British record of 245kg.

Leigh, who lives in Billinge has plans to compete in the British Benchpress Championships in Northampton later in the year with hopes to break the singles lift record.

“I hope to break my own record and claim the British title,” added Leigh, who has retired after serving the Fire Service for more than 30 years.

“That would then qualify me for the European and World Championships – but I’m not committing to anything yet!”
