PHILANTHROPIST Barrie Wells has jetted out to South Africa to visit Wigan athlete Jenny Meadows – one of the Olympic hopefuls he generously supports.

Meadows, a World and European 800m silver medallist, is currently training at the UK Athletics warm-weather camp in Stellenbosch with reigning world champion 400m hurdler Dai Greene.

Wells said: “Dai and Jenny are two of Team GB’s most promising medal hopes for London 2012.

“Helping to get an athlete on the podium is down to the sum of many contributors coming together and working successfully to make a real and lasting difference.”

Wells’ funding supports Meadows, Greene and 16 additional athletes as they begin the countdown to the Olympics.

They give time back to the Foundation through its ‘Athletes 4 Schools’ scheme, which aims to inspire young people through the values of sport, using these elite athletes as positive role models.

Meadows said: “Barrie’s support is so genuine and really adds value. During such a crucial training period it’s great to have him out in South Africa.”

Other athletes to benefit from Wells’ support include Jessica Ennis, Jodie Williams and Holly Bleasdale, the pole vault ace who lives in Wigan.

Bleasdale, who trains at SportCity, is a girl with a big future despite only three years in the sport.

She recently pushed up her British pole vault record to 4.71m.
